2027 Pilgrimage to Montgomery

You can’t understand the most important things from a distance.

You have to get up close.

Bryan Stevenson, EJI founder

The journey begins in Selma walking the Pettus bridge, site of Bloody Sunday. The time is grounded in visiting the Equal Justice Initiative sites in Montgomery-the Legacy Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. This is a spiritual pilgrimage, a shared exploration of our common humanity, distinct opportunity for personal and collective reflection, and expansion and expression of the heart. It is an opportunity to bear witness, to connect, to pray, to be broken open, to heal.

Please note: Montgomery is a physically and spiritually demanding pilgrimage. The days are long and require significant walking. While Montgomery is a place of deep hope, it is an encounter with the human capacity for hatred and violence. Pilgrims should understand the demands on the body and spirit and speak with clergy about any concerns.
